Basics
What is GoText?

GoText is a text messaging platform for group chats and bulk texting. Groups run on a dedicated phone number so everyone can reply and the whole group sees it. Broadcasts send announcements, alerts, reminders and promotions to thousands of contacts at once.

Is GoText a good GroupMe alternative?

Yes. GroupMe is discontinued. GoText runs group conversations over plain text and picture messaging, so nobody installs an app or creates an account. It works on any phone, including flip phones and kosher phones.

Do members need to download an app?

No. Members text a normal phone number from the messaging app already on their phone. There is nothing to download, no account to create and no password to remember.

Does it work on kosher and flip phones?

Yes. Everything runs over standard text and picture messaging, so any phone that can receive a text works.

Who uses GoText?

Schools, shuls, camps, nonprofits, organizations, event organizers and retail businesses use it for announcements, reminders, alerts, scheduling and community group chats.

Is texting for business allowed?

Yes, with registration. Broadcast and promotional accounts register a business with the carriers before sending. Group-chat-only accounts skip that step and can start right away.

Group chats
How does a group chat work?

The group has its own phone number. A member texts that number and GoText relays the message to everyone else in the group, prefixed with the sender's name, so the thread reads like a normal group conversation.

Who can post in a group?

Each group is set to admin-only or open posting. Admin-only is for announcement lists where members can read but not reply to everyone. Open posting is a full two-way conversation.

How do people join or leave a group?

An admin adds members from the dashboard, imports a contact list from CSV, or texts a command to the group number. Anyone can leave by replying STOP, which also removes them from future messages.

Can people add themselves to a group?

Yes. Turn on Auto-Join With Code in group settings and pick a code. New users text # plus your code and their name to the group number and they are added right away, with a welcome text to them and a confirmation to the group admin.

What text commands do groups support?

Texting the group number works for #add Name Phone, #remove, #list, #mute and #unmute. The plain word also works without the # sign, since some carriers strip it, and the sender gets a confirmation either way.

Can I send pictures, videos and voice notes?

Yes. Images, video and audio are sent as picture messages in both group chats and broadcasts. Group admins can turn picture messaging off for a group if they only want plain text.

Does every group need its own number?

Yes. A group needs a dedicated number so replies route to the right conversation. Numbers are requested from inside the app and assigned to your account.

Broadcasts and sending
Can I text large lists?

Yes. Sending is paced automatically to carrier limits, speeding up when messages flow and slowing down when carriers push back, so large sends complete instead of failing.

Can I schedule messages?

Yes. Campaigns can be sent now or scheduled for a later date and time, and drafts are saved as you write. Scheduled sends can be cancelled before they go out.

Will the same person get the same message twice?

No. A strict duplicate block prevents the same number from receiving the same message more than once in a day, even if they appear on several lists.

Can I send from my own phone without logging in?

Yes. Text-to-send lets an approved admin text a command to your GoText number to blast a saved contact list straight from a cellphone.

Can I save message templates?

Yes. The library stores reusable messages and media so recurring announcements and reminders do not have to be retyped.

Can I see delivery results?

Yes. Delivery logs show each message, the recipient, the status and a plain-language reason for any failure, so you can tell a wrong number apart from a carrier block. Logs export to CSV with no row limit.

Automations
What are keyword automations?

A keyword rule watches inbound texts for a word such as JOIN, INFO or SCHEDULE. When it matches, GoText can send a reply, add or remove the contact from a list, tag them, opt them in or out, or start an information flow.

What is an information flow?

A flow is a short series of questions sent one at a time. A contact texts a keyword, answers each prompt by text, and the answers are saved on their contact record. Useful for signups, RSVPs and intake without a form.

What are standard replies?

Built-in responses for STOP, START and HELP, plus a fallback reply for messages that match no keyword, and a no-text phrase list that silently flags contacts who ask not to be texted.

Can GoText answer texts automatically with AI?

Yes. Turn on AI replies and paste a company profile with your hours, services, prices and policies. Incoming questions get a short answer based only on that profile, and it never invents details it was not given.

How does the AI hand a conversation to a person?

You set a handoff keyword, such as AGENT. When a contact texts it, or when the AI has no grounded answer, the reply says a person will follow up and the conversation is flagged for you in the inbox.

Can I test automations before turning them on?

Yes. Each automation has a tester in settings. Type a sample inbound message and see exactly which replies would be sent and which actions would run, without sending anything or changing any records.

Can I forward replies to my cell phone?

Yes. Non-STOP replies can be forwarded to any number you choose, so you see incoming texts without opening the dashboard. Replies also stay threaded by contact in the inbox.

Contacts, numbers and opt-outs
How do I manage contacts and lists?

Import contacts from CSV, paste numbers in any format, or add them one at a time. Numbers are normalized automatically. Contacts can be tagged and grouped into lists, and each contact record shows message history, tags and opt-out status.

Do I need my own phone number?

Yes. Every group and every broadcast account gets a dedicated number so replies come back to you and not to a personal cell phone. Numbers are assigned by request from inside the app.

Can I use more than one phone number?

Yes. An account can hold several numbers, with one set as the main number. When sending from the inbox or compose screen you choose which number the message goes out from.

How do opt-outs and STOP replies work?

Replying STOP to any of your numbers immediately opts that contact out across your account, and no further messages go to them. Opt-outs show on the contact record and in your opt-out list. Replying START opts them back in.

Is my contact data private?

Yes. Each account only sees its own contacts, messages and numbers, and inbound texts are matched only to numbers assigned to your account.

Calls
Does GoText handle phone calls?

Yes. Voice adds call forwarding on your texting number for $15 per month per number. Calls ring through to any phone you choose.

Can I call the whole group?

Yes. Admins can send a voice announcement that calls every member and plays the message out loud, so even a phone that cannot text still gets it. Members can also call the group number to hear the latest announcement.

Do I see who called?

Yes. Every call is logged with the caller, whether it was answered and how long it lasted.

What happens to a missed call?

A missed call can send an automatic text back to the caller, so nobody is left without a response.

Pricing and billing
What does it cost to start?

Nothing. Creating an account, building your group and adding people are free. You only pay when you switch the group on, and that is when it gets its own number.

How much does texting cost?

Four plans. Pay As You Go has no plan fee: you buy credit and spend it as you send, from $.02 a text down to $.0085 when you add $500, plus $10 a month per number and $3 for each extra. Lite is $10 a month plus a $20 starting sending balance, so the first charge is $30, and the balance tops up automatically in $20 steps. Weekly starts at $10 a week for 100 plain texts a day, with no automatic top-ups. Monthly is $50 a month, all of it credited as sending balance, topping up $50 at a time.

Does a second group cost extra?

The first live group is included in your plan. Each additional live group is $10 a month, charged right away for the rest of your current billing period and then with your regular plan charge.

What counts as one text message?

A plain text message is 160 characters. Longer messages are split and each part is billed as its own text message, and every recipient counts separately. Emoji and special characters lower the limit to 70 characters. Messages with a photo, video or audio file are billed at the media rate.

How is a large send paid for?

The full cost is funded from your sending balance before the send starts, topping up automatically on Lite and Monthly. If the card cannot be charged, the send is blocked rather than half-delivered.

What happens if my card fails?

A red banner appears across the app and sending pauses until the payment method is updated. Nothing is lost — the send resumes once payment goes through.

Where do I see my charges?

The Billing page lists every charge with its date and amount, shows your current balance, and lets you update your payment method at any time.

How do I get help?

Every account has a Contact Support page for new number requests, billing questions and technical issues, answered by a real person from inside the app. The Complete Guide covers every plan, setting and command in one place.
